He definitely didn't get it: I remember an interview he did sometime after he landed at Buckingham Palace. He seemed to think he was a popular folk hero and he ended the interview with, "I'm the Fan Man, the man with the fan. Just wait until the Super Bowl!" That season, the Super Bowl was played at a domed stadium (Georgia Bowl, I think). The image of a gnat hitting a windshield immediately came to mind. Fan Man–what a clueless idiot.
