"Read the links I gave. Did the Bush Sr. White House vandalize the White House when they left and taunt Clinton? Did the Reagan ites vandalize the White House when Bush took office?"

I wasn't disputing that. I was disputing your claim that the there "wasn't any" vandalism. There was.

"Keyboards lose keys, especially when they're packed up. It's not just lovebirds that cause keys to be lost. I've helped move a major corporation in a hurry. There was a lot of damage, despite the attempt at care. The same thing happened here."

Right. I'm sure the W key just happened to be the one that "fell off" the keyboards in question during the move.

"There might have been some trivial pranks, but that was it. The GAO was "out to get Bush." Yeah. Right. Those gosh-darn Republicans…oh, wait, Bush is a Republican, too."

I never claimed the "GAO was out to get Bush."

"I work with several volunteer groups for whom confidentiality is crucial. That means that, even when the discussion is off topic, I need to be careful about what I reveal. The only reason I mentioned it is because I've seen the same information reported in the news, but in a way that avoided linking it to this discussion.

I keep hoping someone will pick up the trail, but I wonder if even that's pushing it."

Really? I've been following this story pretty closely and consider myself a discerning reader and I've not picked up on it. If you want to leave it hanging out there as a 'teaser', that's fine but it's not really helping to back up your point and from what little you've revealed, it still doesn't make sense why there's been no more outcry about this verdict than what we've seen. Assuming Berger had damaging info on the W admin, he also had it on the Clinton admin which is probably why he destroyed some of the documents. He wasn't out to protect the W admin, by any stretch.

Keyboards lose keys, especially when they're packed up. It's not just lovebirds that cause keys to be lost. I've helped move a major corporation in a hurry. There was a lot of damage, despite the attempt at care. The same thing happened here.

There might have been some trivial pranks, but that was it. The GAO was "out to get Bush." Yeah. Right. Those gosh-darn Republicans...oh, wait, Bush is a Republican, too.

And yes, there's been several reports out on why no one wants to talk about Sandy's theft.

I work with several volunteer groups for whom confidentiality is crucial. That means that, even when the discussion is off topic, I need to be careful about what I reveal. That reminds me, I need to do a post on what I was doing on 9/11 and the weeks after. You did a nice one. I should do mine -- more than this, at least.

Rob: "The papers Sandy took involved something no one wants out. I probably should just shut up. It's made the news, but…ah never mind."

ST: What's made the news? The information that "nobody wants out"? If so, isn't it a little late to be worrying about "what gets out"?

Rob: "And Bachbone — apparently you missed the addendum on the "White House" vandalism story. There wasn't any. Someone removed one key cap and put it in the drawer, and it all got blown out of proportion. "

ST: Rob, that's not accurate, and the link you provided later from the Washington Post proves it (emphasis added):

"Damage, theft, vandalism, and pranks occurred in the White House complex during the 2001 presidential transition," concluded the report, which had been commissioned by Rep. Robert L. Barr Jr. (R-Ga.). "Incidents such as the removal of keys from computer keyboards; the theft of various items; the leaving of certain voice mail messages, signs and written messages; and the placing of glue on desk drawers clearly were intentional acts."

Bachbone was a bit more on the mark than you were.

Salon.
and Ari Fleischer's White House Press Briefing say the damage wasn't significant.

The Washington Post found that the damage was typical of White House transitions, citing the Bush to Clinton transition and The Reagan to Bush transition.

Rob, In January,2001, Bush said only minor damage was done. In April, 2001, the GAO said minor damage had been done to office space. It admitted not checking office equipment. In June, 2001, the administration released a list of actual damages, by Ari Fleisher to the WaPo: 75 phones had been tampered with, including 10 with lines cut; obscene graffiti was on walls of 6 offices; 100 computer keyboards were damaged enough that they no longer worked; porn was left on office photocopiers; 20% of desks in the Eisenhower Office complex were overturned; a 20 inch presidential seal was ripped off a wall. Tony Snow reported that phone lines had been reprogrammed so they no longer rang where they were supposed to. And the Clintons returned some $80,000 in furniture that had been donated to the government, claiming "someone" mis-catalogued them as belonging to the Clintons. Man! Those movers must all have been Bush haters to have done all that while moving things. And the staffer who "mis-catalogued" may have been the one who told Sandy Bergler it was fine to stuff classified documents into his pants and socks. Finally, a White House staffer questioned the Clintons about moving that furniture, starting up to a year before they left, but was ignored. (He should consider himself lucky not to have been cursed out or had a lamp hurled at his noggin, I guess.)

However, I agree that letting Bergler off easy is at least some responsibility of the Bush administration.

Not Clinton! Bush is president, not Bill now! I thought you knew that! Bush in power.

The papers Sandy took involved something no one wants out. I probably should just shut up. It's made the news, but...ah never mind.

And Bachbone -- apparently you missed the addendum on the "White House" vandalism story. There wasn't any. Someone removed one key cap and put it in the drawer, and it all got blown out of proportion. There was some damage from the movers who removed the non-permanent stuff. Happens every time I move, too, although I go back and clean up afterward.

As usual, the accusations made the front page. The retractions wound up inside the newspaper some place no one reads.

I'm sure lots of unfortunates are doin' hard time for crimes a lot less serious!
What did G. Gordon Liddy and Chuck Colson do time for??

Bush seems to want to leave "vengeance" to the Lord. Remember how he refused to publicize, much less prosecute, for the damage and theft in the White House the Clintons and their "istas" did when leaving? That policy will no doubt pay him dividends in the end, but I, for one, would love to see some on Earth haid slappin' goin' on!

Evon: "Unlike the guy in Casa Blanca, I'm not shocked."

ST: Me either, unfortunately :(

Lorica: "Then after being convicted of a very serious crime, he is allowed a to have his security clearance back just in time for Hillary's Presidency. God Help Us. "

ST: I did not even think about that. Yikes!

Severian: "The teflon coated administration would be a good description."

ST: Indeed it would. They got a slap on the wrist from the 9-11 Commission, too.

Rob: "The deal was made because it actually works out for both sides. There's things Bush doesn't want to have get out, and things the Clintons don't want out. Think of it as mutually assured destruction, and you'll realize why this token punishment was accepted by all."

ST: You think Bush and Clinton influenced the verdict in this?

Evon: “Unlike the guy in Casa Blanca, I’m not shocked.”

ST: Me either, unfortunately

Lorica: “Then after being convicted of a very serious crime, he is allowed a to have his security clearance back just in time for Hillary’s Presidency. God Help Us. ”

ST: I did not even think about that. Yikes!

Severian: “The teflon coated administration would be a good description.”

ST: Indeed it would. They got a slap on the wrist from the 9-11 Commission, too.

Rob: “The deal was made because it actually works out for both sides. There’s things Bush doesn’t want to have get out, and things the Clintons don’t want out. Think of it as mutually assured destruction, and you’ll realize why this token punishment was accepted by all.”

This is outrageous, not only the punishment meted out, but the entire attitude of Berger and his Clinton era supporters. "Oh, that's just how he is, kind of absentminded and disorganized...hee hee hee, that's ol'Sandy." That is such an insult to those who have clearances and manage to actually take the use and control of classified information seriously. For the average person, the penalty would have been greater for a minor infraction, but ol'Sandy gets off with a slap on the wrist for deliberately removing and destroying KEYWORD coded documents! He should be thrown in jail and have his clearance permanently revoked.

I've seen far worse done to people who mishandled far less sensitive data. The ability of Clinton era officials to get away with the most incredibly serious acts still baffles me. The teflon coated administration would be a good description.

The funny thing is that if I were to leave My SSN on my desk top at work, which I do work for the Government, I would could lose my job for that security violation. Here is Berger stealing documents for a grand jury investigation and he gets a slap on the wrist. You have to ask yourself, who is actually going to pay this fine?? Then after being convicted of a very serious crime, he is allowed a to have his security clearance back just in time for Hillary's Presidency. God Help Us.
