"That's what the wrongdoing boiled down to. The rest was a waste of our time (and money) chasing up the same issues that the David Brock spent his early career doing. "

I realize this has been dead for a mintue but i was reading through this blog and i just had to comment on this little bit.

How was it a waste of money?

We are talking about a investigating a man who has been accused of harrasment by multiple women. Not just paula jones. What really ticks me off about the whole thing is how we were hearing the nuts and sluts defense. Paula jones was a bimbo slut. Everyone else was a bimbo slut too as i remember it. If i'm right women's rights was once about fighting these kind of simple minded ideas about women. Now because it's clinton it's ok? NOW and the other's women's groups gave him a pass because of his abortion views. Yet he did something far worse then take a stand agianst abortion. He violated women. He made them feel horrid things. Yet somehow it's ok because it's him. He can be as disrespectful to women as he wants all because of one issue. This must be why no one takes women's right seriously anymore.

"1) Individual rights and personal property"
The PATRIOT act? State sponsored prayer in schools?

"2) Personal Responsibility"
Umm, like Turdblossom and Scooter are standing up and taking responsibility?

"3) Less government"

Well, W. does seem to want to take away social programs, but he doesn't mind spending lots of taxpayer money enriching his buddies.

"4) Strong National Security"

We were attacked by terrorists in the US under a Republican administration, and we still have not caught the guy who did it. Instead we attacked a country that had nothing to do with it. Somehow I don't feel very secure.

I apologize about the rude and hatelful things you've heard.

My point is this:
Conservatives have a belief system and liberals have a belief system. I more closely align myself with conservativism than liberalism for a few reasons. None of those reasons is due to personalities or the character of individual leaders.

A few of those reasons:
1) Individual rights and personal property
2) Personal Responsibility
3) Less government
4) Strong National Security

If you take each one you can see how conservatives and liberals differ.

For reason #1 you can read Ward Connerly's "Creating Equal" and see the work that Pacific Legal Foundation does concerning personal property rights and eminent domain state property grabs.

For reason #2 you can go back to the Welfare Reform that was so needed that took a third time for Clinton to sign and most other liberals in the Democrat party were against and wanted Bill to change it. Bill saw the writing on the wall. Most people want accountability and responsibility from able-bodied people. Conservatives are more closely aligned with teaching people how to fish rather than giving them fish. As another example you can see that there are over 180 illiteracy government programs in this nation. Why not 1? Why 180? Why? Because if you vote against an illiteracy program you are DEEMED as mean-spirited and uncompassionate. The press will tarnish you and most Republicans are to the left of center and vote for these things because they do not want to be tarred and feathered. Conservatives want an end to this nonsense. We could go 10 years with no budget increases while we re-prioritize what we spend on and most conservatives would LOVE to see that happen but for over 6 decades the amount of governmetn spending has always INCREASED. This government has grown (moved left) every year.

For reason #3, I see liberals as being caring and compassionate and well-intentioned but they always turn to big government type of solutions. Single-payer health care (7% of the economy would have to be taxed in order to match expenditures - currently 22% of the economy is taxed). Government funding of stem-cell research. Conservatives see that prices are lower and the economy is stronger if the government lets the private sector take care of most of the issues. The reasons for health care rising in prices so much is that the market forces have been taken out of the picture. Currently people only have $10 co-pays and go to the doctor for everything and don't even do things to take care of their health by eating properly and exercising. The government can provide a safety net but when the american public want to demand no cost to them (except a $10 copay) and benefits that pay for everything under the sun this is the situation we get. Health Insurance should go back to being catastrophic. You pay insurance for catastropic events and you pay out of your pocket for any CARE THAT YOU NEED that's less than a thousand dollars or two. If that happens people will start to take better care of thierselves and plan better and make better decisions.

Reason #4, The conservative positions leave more room for a strong national security. The liberal positions seem to attack America budget wise and rhetoric wise. If the budget is over expended in every other program, then the national defense appropriations are squeezed. While the left seems to give cozying up rhetoric to Casto and Gorbi and other leftist leaders in Europe and trash countries like Israel (the democracy in the region surrounded by dictators who want Israel wiped off the map), conservatives like myself are proud of our lone superpower status and want to try to protect this nation with things like a missle-defense system from nations like North Korea.

If none of these things appeal to you, you either have different values or its because you misunderstand what these reasons and/or policies would be like in America. I think these policies would improve America!

Baklava,

I, too, lived in CA, and saw for myself the leftwing bias of many of the government workers. I went to the DMV where the girl behind the counter handed out "NO on 187" pencils to fill out paper work with. I dealt with Orange County election officials that designated people as Democrats for their voter registrations if they did all but strangle that worker. I saw the discarded petitons behind the Santa Ana Post office for 187 and for 3 strikes.

I had my tires slashed for having a Bob Dornan bumper sticker on my car. I've been cut off and the idiot doing it had his car festooned with Democrat bumper stickers, and I watched as this liberal almost rolled his car while completing the manoever and trying to give me the finger at the same time.

I was there gathering petition signatures to remove Doris Allen from office. And do you want to hear the lies told by Democrats that wanted us to be kicked out of public places were we were collecting signatures?

I was there for the LA riots and heard every excuse under the sun as to why there was nothing wrong with what the rioters did.

AND, I did complain bitterly to the press about their bias and misreporting of the situations. I did have the Orange County Register's Ombudsman's fax number memorized. More often than not, my complaints were published by the OC Register's ombudsman as valid and to be recified.

Did KABC TV ever appologize for running Democrat propaganda as news stories. Example being that the GOP congress cutting school lunches and the children were going to starve? How many school children have starved in LA since 1994?

How about the LA media refusing to report that LA schools were being picketed by Hispanic parents demanding that their children be taught in ENGLISH, not Spanish???

I'll get off the soap box. I won't hold my breath waiting for some one to tell me these abuses do not continue.

Webmistress, I refer you to Ellen Ratner re: Liberal glee at soldiers dying in Iraq to bring down Bush. Ms. Ratner DID publish an article about that and got roundly criticized for what she was calling for, IE, Deaths of tens of thousands of soldiers to prove Bush wrong and hound him out of office.

Do you need quotes from Liberal websites on how stupid the troops are to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq? Need I remind you of the stories that said that Pat Tillman (Former NFL Defensive back) deserved what he got?

I think webmistress, you need to open your eyes and ears much wider and tone down your personal arrogance and pride before you even near the state you talk about.

Baklava writes: <em>The funny thing is that most conservatives when pressed will actually admit that the rank-and-file liberals are well intentioned. </em>

I don't hear from conservatives that liberals are well intentioned. I hear that we are evil, stupid, uninformed, and goddless. I've heard conservatives say that liberals are happy that our troops are being killed in Iraq because it makes Bush look bad. (For the record, I mourn for them and their families.) I've also heard conservatives accuse liberals of what you were accused of--wanting New Orleans to sink to make the government look bad. From my perspective, a lot of the hate is a two-way street.

I honestly don't think I'll ever be a conservative. I've listened to conservative talk radio and read conservative writings for many years and the transformation hasn't happened for me. However, I am consciously trying to see things from both sides. Life is too short to go through life hating people. I suspect that answers to many questions are somewhere in the middle.

Webmistress wrote, <em>"I came to the realization that conservatives/Republicans want the same things I do–to live a good and purposeful life in a society that supports opportunity. We just disagree (pretty strongly) about how to get there."</em>

That's one of the most reasonable things I've seen you write.

Here's the problem in a nutshell <strong>PCD</strong> and <strong>Webmistress</strong>... (from my point of view):

99% of Americans want a good economy, a good environment, good education for their kids, to be taxed a decent amount only, to have government be there when needed but not there when not, etc. etc. This 99% includes common rank-and-file liberals and conservatives.

Unfortunately Webmistress and PCD, the press and the non rank and file people (the leaders) <strong>who almost ALL are to the left of center</strong> have for over 5 decades demonized the conservatives as not caring, mean-spirited (ala Al Gore speak), as uncompassionate, as dangerous, as liars, etc.

So MANY liberals Webmistress and PCD are prone to meaness and ugliness when they debate. They are prone to expressing their HATRED for Republicans (who aren't even conservative) and conservatives themselves.

When they do this they tend to act like they know what conservatives believe, think and feel when they are FAR FROM THE TRUTH.

As examples I'll relay to you two stories:
1) I work in the belly of the beast in the state of CA. When Condaleeza Rice was nominated for Secretary of State, I heard some of the ugliest comments come from state workers here (who are leftist). While I have kept my politics a secret to 99% of my coworkers I simply heard these ugly comments from across cubicle walls and was astonished what language they would use about an intelligent accomplished woman who is black.
2) There are about 3 people where I work that do know my politics. One who was interested in having a relationship with me. During our initial conversations where we relay who we are, I relayed to her my big conversion in 1991. She was in horror. Since that day, I have had to do damage control and politely let her know time and time again (to no avail) that what she thinks and states what I believe isn't true. The latest incident I didn't address. I heard through a coworker on Tuesday after <strong>Hurricane Katrina </strong>that she said that I must be happy about what has happened to New Orleans and that I probably don't want any supplies to get to the residents of New Orleans. (seems that the Louisiana Department of Health Services denied American Red Cross from brining supplies to the Convention Center - unfortunately "she" probably never read that)

So what is the deal in my eyes?
The problem as I see it is most lefties actually do hate conservatives or Republicans because they have been conditioned to believe the worst about conservatives and Republicans.

Just like ST believed the worst about Republicans and conservatives.

Just like I thought the worst about Republicans and conservatives.

Coming to these sites Webmistress and or listening to talk radio is a first step for you to be exposed to an alternative point of view that will challenge how you were conditioned. This will not help "her" in the story above. This will not help the Condaleeza Rice haters in the story above. This will only help people who venture out to see other sources of information and opinion.

<strong>What ST wrote about here was that the PRESS</strong> has treated Star and Fitzgerald differently. It totally is irrelevant that one person thinks that Star's investigation wasn't important or that Fitzgerald's is. What is important to note that ST noted was that the press is treating them differently.

This is the continued pattern of the press and leaders of this country. It has turned a whole 50% (well probably more like 48% due to the last election) of the people towards HATING the other 50% of americans.

The funny thing is that most conservatives when pressed will actually admit that the rank-and-file liberals are well intentioned. They want a utopia, where there is no poor and they feel for the poor and they want a clean environment. Well-intentionalism isn't the answer. The CORRECT solutions are the answer.

While conservatives believe it is better to teach and able-bodies person how to fish rather than give them fish, we are lambasted for not caring. I as a centrist conservative in state government see the rampant abuse of taxpayer dollars. We are diluting the safety net that is needed for non-able bodied people by giving money, benefits, and assistance to everyone including very able-bodied people who are didn't think of thier future.

I'll end it here, just to say I'm happy that Webmistress wrote what she wrote.

Webmistress wrote, “I came to the realization that conservatives/Republicans want the same things I do–to live a good and purposeful life in a society that supports opportunity. We just disagree (pretty strongly) about how to get there.”

That’s one of the most reasonable things I’ve seen you write.

Here’s the problem in a nutshell PCD and Webmistress… (from my point of view):

99% of Americans want a good economy, a good environment, good education for their kids, to be taxed a decent amount only, to have government be there when needed but not there when not, etc. etc. This 99% includes common rank-and-file liberals and conservatives.

Unfortunately Webmistress and PCD, the press and the non rank and file people (the leaders) who almost ALL are to the left of center have for over 5 decades demonized the conservatives as not caring, mean-spirited (ala Al Gore speak), as uncompassionate, as dangerous, as liars, etc.

So MANY liberals Webmistress and PCD are prone to meaness and ugliness when they debate. They are prone to expressing their HATRED for Republicans (who aren’t even conservative) and conservatives themselves.

When they do this they tend to act like they know what conservatives believe, think and feel when they are FAR FROM THE TRUTH.

As examples I’ll relay to you two stories:
Since that day, I have had to do damage control and politely let her know time and time again (to no avail) that what she thinks and states what I believe isn’t true. The latest incident I didn’t address. I heard through a coworker on Tuesday after Hurricane Katrina that she said that I must be happy about what has happened to New Orleans and that I probably don’t want any supplies to get to the residents of New Orleans. (seems that the Louisiana Department of Health Services denied American Red Cross from brining supplies to the Convention Center – unfortunately “she” probably never read that)

This will not help “her” in the story above. This will not help the Condaleeza Rice haters in the story above. This will only help people who venture out to see other sources of information and opinion.

What ST wrote about here was that the PRESS has treated Star and Fitzgerald differently. It totally is irrelevant that one person thinks that Star’s investigation wasn’t important or that Fitzgerald’s is.

Well-intentionalism isn’t the answer. The CORRECT solutions are the answer.

While conservatives believe it is better to teach and able-bodies person how to fish rather than give them fish, we are lambasted for not caring. I as a centrist conservative in state government see the rampant abuse of taxpayer dollars. We are diluting the safety net that is needed for non-able bodied people by giving money, benefits, and assistance to everyone including very able-bodied people who are didn’t think of thier future.

I’ll end it here, just to say I’m happy that Webmistress wrote what she wrote.

Sister,

I also should inform you that Dubuque is home to the convent where the Sisters Hennessey base their anti-war, anti-war on drugs nun's network from. The Hennesseys get attested each year for trespassing on the School of the Americas. They feel no law applies to them, and they'd argue with Jesus Christ if he disagreed with any of their stands or actions like filling out absentee ballots for mentally disabled sisters (Alzheimers) in the local nursing homes.

Sister,

Not in the least. Come visit me during Iowa Caucuses or the Iowa Primary. I'll show you Teamster goon squads from Chicago here to beat people who don't sign up for the union and to also make them support the union candidate. I'll show you how mean spirited even Liberal members of the local school board are. One wearing an anti-Bush sign on her rear for the local newspaper to photograph.

PCD my friend, while I agree with your comments about DU, Daily Kos, MoveOn, and Howard Dean, don't you think your comments about liberals in general are a bit harsh?

Mistress,

Liberals do hate deeply and passionately. Just parse any Howard Dean or Al Gore speech. There is a hate for all this isn't agreed to their "standards". If you still disagree, I point you to MoveOn.org, Daily Kos, and Democrat Underground to name a few websites of Liberal hate. Then I'll point you to Air Slander, oops, Air America. They are cleaning up their act as they haven't swindled any Boys and Girls clubs for operating money lately. Finally, I'll point you at the tasteless cartoons of Ted Rall.

Don't get high and mighty about how virtuous Liberals are, because they are nothing more than gutter trash with a high opinion of themselves.

I'm actually pretty happy w/what I see. After getting fed up w/hearing liberals hate America, liberals hate Christians, liberals want others to suffer, etc., I came to the realization that conservatives/Republicans want the same things I do--to live a good and purposeful life in a society that supports opportunity. We just disagree (pretty strongly) about how to get there.

Having read a fair number of posts on this site, I do, however, see patterns of debate that end w/someone being accused of attacks and hate. I'm specifically thinking of the exchange w/Brian last week.

Yes, I used "slimy" first. I just can't type that man's name without out putting an insult in front of it. It's a rare disorder I have. I'm looking for a 12-step program.

"You guys live and breathe for the attack (while getting the facts wrong"

Baklava just a quick correction...

Being the victim of sexual harrassment is not a violation of a persons civil rights according to the law. In fact the Civil Rights Act of 1965 makes no mention of discrimination based on gender. It protects individuals from "discrimination or segregation on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin." Protection from discrimination based on gender was to be covered under the Equal Rights Ammendment which failed to be ratified by 2/3 of the states. Here is the complete text of the Civil Rights Act http://usinfo.state.gov/usa/infousa/facts/democrac/39.htm

I would also like to point out the use of the term "slimy" as a adjective to decribe Valerie Plame would generally be considered an "attack".
