Reading that letter gives me new understanding of the word ‘bittersweet’. It is trajic that this boy died. The grief felt by this father is incomprehensible to me. The thought of losing one of my kids fills me with abject terror, so I can’t even sympathise with the man; it’s just too much to imagine.

Conversely, knowing that people like SGT Stokely’a father exist in America today fills me with tremendous pride and hope. He is the type of American that I strive to be, and the reason we need to fight to keep American values alive.

In his short life, SGT Michael Stokely has left a mark on the world larger than most of us ever will, certainly bigger than myself.
