That’s so funny Steve! I used to think REM was a great band (specifically the Murmur album). After reading some of the things Michael Stipe has said, I cannot bear to listen to them. He sounds so whiny now. It’s weird how my perception of the music changed so dramatically just from reading about the author.

Bono’s politics annoy me, but he never seems to make them a basis for moral superiority. Far too many lefties feel that every decent, intelligent person of integrity must agree with them, and therefore anyone disagreeing is evil and stupid.

Bono is unrealistic enough to embrace a silly rich man’s socialism, but he’s realistic enough to know he shares the world with people who do not, and if he wants their help in his work he has to work with them.

On top of that, he seems to be a genuinely good person.

So I can listen to U2 and enjoy them. Many years ago I learned that my continued enjoyment of REM was contingent on my not reading or hearing naything at all about the band’s personal life or views. As for U2 I need not set aside a paper or magazine with an article about Bono, knowing that it will not grate to the extent that ti spoils my appreciation.
