Nagin revises “chocolate city” comment

Posted by: ST on January 17, 2006 at 10:15 pm

Sorta.

Ian at the Political Teen has the video with transcript:

MAYOR RAY NAGIN: Do you know anything about chocolate?

REPORTER: I’m asking you.

NAGIN: I’m asking you

NAGIN: Do you know anything chocolate? How do you make chocolate? You take dark chocolate, you mix it with white milk, and it becomes a delicious drink. That’s the chocolate I’m talking about.

There was a simpler way of expressing this, Mr. Nagin, ya know. Then again, Nagin has never been one to use his noggin, if his handling of the Hurricane Katrina fiasco is any indication.

Sidenote: Props go out to those quoted in the media as being outraged by the mayor’s less than sensible remarks. Glad to see some out there unafraid to openly criticize him, but it’d be nice to see the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton weigh in on this and maybe show some consistency on the issue of race for once.

Too bad Nagin doesn’t know anything about cleaning up a city and making it a safe, decent place to live …

  2. scmommy says:

ttyler5, he couldnt clean the city up before the storm, he certainly can’t, and has know intention of making it safe now. IF he does, then he can’t blame Bush for all of his problems.

  3. Jack Deth says:

Ray will probably driving a bus after Louisiana’s delayed and re-scheduled elections.

He was way too little way too late during and after Katrina. Too bad his much needed constituency has left and are nowhere to be found.

    Jack.

  4. camojack says:

The jack@$$ isn’t even able to “spin” his racist drivel well… :-w

  5. PCD says:

Nagin is toast. The poor boy is barely bright enough to recognize that his days on the gravy train are over. He moved to Dallas. He’s not going to be the big cheese there either.

  6. Baklava says:

In his original speech he didn’t just use the word chocolate but his next sentence was talking about New Orleans being a majority african-amrerican city.

Now he’s acting like it should be 50/50 and that’s how you make chocolate? Puhlease.

  7. andrew says:

“There was a simpler way of expressing this, Mr. Nagin, ya know.”

I think he should have avoided the metaphors and said clearly that he hopes the reconstruction doesn’t disproportionately leave out some New Orleans citizens.

  8. tommy in nyc says:

Well it was a pretty brain-dead comment. The only possible justifaction for such a remark was that because of the massive damage to the predominatly African-American parts of the city compared to the Downtown French-Quarter but he really should’ve kept his trap shut. That and many former black NOLA residents won’t bother coming back. Which’ll probably change change the racial make-up of the city compared to pre-Katrina. So in effect NOLA will never be the same which shouldn’t suprise anybody.

OT, but you can get a podcast of the Hitchens/Ritter debate at the Tarrytown Music Hall website. Click on ‘podcast’ on the lower left.

  10. Lorica says:

These are the stupid remarks of a desperate man. He realizes that due to his incompentancy he lost his white vote so he is looking to get back some of his chocolate chips. I have heard some of the testimony of some of the folk displaced by the disaster in New Orleans, and those folk don’t want to go back. Many of them talk about the hell they were living in before the disaster. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future to New Orleans. – Lorica

  11. benning says:

If Jesse and Al had anything to say regarding this, it would be to support Nagin against all you Racist, Bigoted, right-wing, Republican hate-mongers.

You oughta know that by now. I’m only saying this as a Racist, Bigoted, right-wing, Republican hate-monger.

Does this mean Whites can’t have chocolate anymore?

  12. PCD says:

    benning,

I’m still working on getting a steady supply of strawberries and cucumbers.

  13. Steve Skubinna says:

You know, if you mix bullshit with milk it doesn’t produce a delicious drink. I am reminded of my favorite line from King of the Hill:

“Just when I think you’ve said the stupidest thing ever, you keep talkin!”

  14. cuge says:

Guess we can’t all just get along.

What does this mean for all those Ovaltine commercials / drinkers?

    :o

  15. C says:

Nagin is a freaking fool. No matter how you try to justify his words, they WERE racist remarks. Not only os he a horrible leader as he proved to be during the storm, but he doesn’t know how to speak publicly. When one is a politician one needs to THINK before one speaks. He said what he wanted to say and there is no changing it now. How does he know what God wants, can he read God’s mind. The man is an idiot and needs to be kicked out of office before he makes the city look like crap across the rest of the nation, again.
