From the transcript of Bush's answer today to a question posed to him today about nuclear weapons in America.

Q Yes. And I want to know your opinion about these weapons of mass destruction, that when the United States is going to destroy the nuclear weapons to prevail the peace in the world.

THE PRESIDENT: Got it. No, I appreciate it. One of the first things I did as the President was to negotiate a reduction of nuclear -- deployable nuclear weapons with Vladimir Putin. Actually, I think we had 6,000 at the time, and we agreed to reduce our nuclear -- deployable nuclear arsenals to between 1,700 and 2,200. And we're in the process of doing that now. And then of course, there will be -- another President can then evaluate where we are. So we're in the process of honoring what's called the Moscow Treaty.

steve, if you and your Iranian friends push Israel too far, parts of Iran will be turned into Green Glass.

steve, how many fools are going to be human shields for Iran since the program worked so well for Saddam?

- Bak - Whats ironic is that the picture of the Middle East has changed so dramatically in the past 10 years, and even moreso in the past 3. I failed to mention this in my earlier post, but its the third leg in the tripod of reasons for the sudden uptick in sabre rattling and bluster by the Shia Mullahs in Tehran. If you look at the demographic of the region now you see Egypt, Lybia, Saudi, UAE, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Portions of Pakistan, and now Iraq, essentially at peace, if not rock solid stability. Iran finds itself surrounded rather than Isreal. Iran, Jordon to some extent, Syria, small areas in the Russian steppes, some area's of Northern Pakistan, Hamas and a few other smaller groups in the Palistine areas, a few fuedul tribes in Indonesia and elsewhere, pretty much comprises the core of whats left of the Washhabi Celiphate Jihadist movement. The actions of Iran clearly show a desperation to stem the tide of a flaging Muslim extremist campaign support worldwide, as well as the other two things I mentioned. I don't think they had a clue of the depth of world, and principlly American response, when they planned the Al Qeada adventures. Unfortunately for the region, they're apparently determined to repeat the same mistakes....

- Just finished watching our President give an extensive speech, almost one could say a prelude to the upcoming state of the union adress. He answered a tremendous range of questions from the audience, uncontrolled questioners I might add, unlike the correographed sort of thing you so often see at gatherings of the opposition. Overall I think he pretty well answered his critics, and put the ball back in Congress's court, pointing out that much of the pending legislation has suffered from partisan foot dragging. I would have liked him to be more forceful in his defense of his defense. In other words his actions in defending the people from our enemies. Almost every legitimate unskewed poll taken since the NYT, in concert with the law-breaking "leakers", blared national secrets, has shown the vast majority of Americans are solidly behind him. So in my opinion theres no need to be understated about things in this area. In fact the left, which now is fiercly fighting off the announced "engagement" to their followers by Usama, are definately in a no-win position on almost every anti-war stance they've taken thus far, having garnered bad PR and gained little politically. Other than that, I'd give him an A-. Be interesting to see how he fine tunes the message in the SOTU address.

As part of these negotiations Israels nuclear weapons should be destroyed..

That's like the following analogy:
A kidnapper/hijacker/murderer/[pick your favorite criminal] is NEGOTIATED with and as part of the negotiations the criminal insists that the victims give up the right to defend themselves by having their firearms taken away.

More or less it's like law abiding citizens in places like Washington D.C. and New York City having to give up their firearms leaving the only people armed being criminals. That is why the murder rates in those cities were the highest per capita for many years. Leave the well-intentioned people defenseless and see what happens. A bloodbath. Only the left wants to see that policy continue. And it would if you disarm the democratic nation of Israel surrounded by countries who want to see Israel wiped off the map.

:-? The Israeli's will never give up their nukes. Never. And who can blame them if they don't? Personally I think this is not a good situation. Gotta bad felling this ain't be resolved peacefully. But that's just an opinion. Battle lines are being drawn. and it doesn't look like anyone is backing down.

- After 15+ years of negotiations and failed diplomacy, involving a dozen countries including the US, Steve takes to the usual wishful thinking meme, and implies its all the big bad Wests fault yet again...

- The Mullahs are running under two idea's. the first is that nuclear weapons are its only way to long term survival against the growing strength of Iranian moderates, even though they know the chances of success are 10,000:1. Secondly, like the Russians and others before them, they mistake Western caution, and dogged diplomacy as an unwillingness to act. They will not stop, and they will not negotiate, as clearly indicated by the nutcase pronouncements of the Iranian President calling for the Iradication of Isreal, and denying the existence of the Holocaust.

- With all that in mind Steve, I'm sure the Western leadership would be more than happy to hear just how you'd acomplish this feat of political magic.

- Sticking your head in the sand when tyrrants threaten the peace is a sure way to disaster, as has been proven so many times in history its a waste of time to even discuss it. Your ideas fly in the face of reality Steve, and worse they tend to get even more people killed by substituting wishful thinking for prudent and effective leadership and action.

The time has come to re-establish diplomatic ties with Iran. The US should then negotiate an end to the Iranian bomb program, if there is one. As part of these negotiations Israels nuclear weapons should be destroyed.. Further the US should enter into talks with all Middle Eastern countries to make the entire area nuclear weapons free zone. Peace

- Just when it looks like things are beggining to settle down in Iraq, and possibly some sort of quiet in the Isreali/Palistinian conflict, we get Charon going down medically, and Iran needing to take its rightful place in Mad Mullahs of history. Reliable intel sources say that Iran plans to do its first test underground in March. If such a test goes off as scheduled, it will be the nuke the breaks the camels back, and Isreal will strike. Apparently Despotic regimes like Tehran never learn the lessons of a podium shoe banger, a Lybian faker, or a palace building lunitic. Unless the moderates in Iran act to reverse this frieght train, its pretty clear where we're headed.

- Speaking of Palastine, former President Jimmy Carter is in the area with a large contingent of election obsevers to monitor the balloting in the up-coming parliamentary elections. Sources say that security has been heavily beefed up coming on the heels of kidnapping threats against the Carter group....

- Wonder if Carter is on the ticket....
