John McCain: to vote for or not to vote for in ’08?

John Hawkins at Right Wing News has written what he calls the conservative case against John McCain in 2008, and has made some pretty convincing arguments. Check them out and let me know what you think.

I checked back on that Internet straw poll Matt Margoles ran. McCain got a heavy No vote in the poll.

My speculation is that McCain polls well among editors and reporters of the MSM, but the GOP base turned its back on McCain.

  2. I don’t know why Conservatives have such a beef with McCain. Did the SC push poll in 2000 work that well?

  3. Don’t really think it has anything to do with any 2000 push polling. The dislike for McCain is country wide and stems from a variety of things, most noteably on his not supporting the President on certain issues conservatives wanted his support on (I think the tax cuts were one of the issues).

  4. steve says:

Although, McCain is correct except when he is not, he is a warmonger. That fact alone will prevent him from ever becoming the President. And the tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% of Americans(those making more then $1 million), while we are at war, is uncoscionable and immoral. bush has increased the debt by 47% or 3 trillion. Peace

    Justin,

The GOP base doesn’t like mavericks who get a wild hair and go off being stupid. McCain has done this too many times for too many issues. He started this behavior long before 2000.

  6. Pam says:

McCain does have a base and they are loyal to him. Just as Joe Liberman has a base….both men stand up for what they believe in and that is an admirable trait. I think McCain is a good senator, but I don’t see him being a good POTUS. My reason is twofold
    A- age
    B- being a tortured POW.

I am not so sure that there isn’t some neurological damage from the torture that we have not seen up to this point.

  7. Baklava says:

I will not vote for McCain in a primary but if in the general election it is McCain versus a liberal Democrat, I will be voting for McCain.

I hope for an Allen, Romney, Rice or Tancredo myself.

  8. benning says:

I agree with Baklava. I won’t support him in the primaries. I’ll only, reluctantly vote for McCain against a lib Dem.

Justin: McCain doesn’t understand what the 1st Amendment means – free speech – and thus, is unqualified for public office. He can hold whatever beliefs he wishes. But I won’t willingly vote for someone whose grasp of the Constitution is so weak.

Like so many in the Political Class, McCain thinks the Constitution is the Government’s check on the People. It is not. It is the exact opposite! That document is ours!

  9. Baklava says:

    Repeat after me everyone:

    I agree with Baklava! 8-|

Justin, Read the enumerated reasons in the link that ST provided. VOting against the Bush tax cuts twice? That is my friend, something a liberal would LIKE McCain for but conservatives would see as a definite red (pink) flag.

  10. tommy in nyc says:

Baklava didn’t the U.S. Senate today vote to raise the limit on this nation’s debt ceiling this morning. Fiscal Responsibilty? Those words are considered profanity by the G.O.P. ……….. Then the lecture the left about a welfare state. Yep,Yep,Yep The Gates,Buffets, etc, etc need that tax cut right? C’mon Baklava you know you’re smarter than that.

  11. Baklava says:

Tommy. Didn’t the revenues grow more than expenditures due to the growing economy. And doesn’t tax rate cuts boost an economy? I never mentioned fiscal responsibility. But you took my comment about tax cuts and turned it into that. So I’m bringing it back to the responsible thing to do during a recesssion which is tax rate cuts which ends up helping the economy and boosting revenues into the government. And… I’ve told you this over 10 times and you come back with a failure to connect in your brain. I’m not trying to be harsh. I’m trying to help you understand basic concepts.

I, my friend, can run circles around you all day or you can at least try to understand the concept OR you can act like you would’ve been for tax rate increases during a recession. Would you have?

  12. PCD says:

    Bak,

Tommy is ignorant of the fact that both Gates and Buffet are LIBERAL DEMOCRATS!!!! As is George Soros. As is Theresa Heinz.

Tommy your tinfoil hat getting too tight? Maybe try thinking things out for once and not using quotes from the DNC or Daily Krap.

  13. tommy in nyc says:

Man Baklava I don’t doubt that you can explain to this pot-head about the nuances of finance better than I can. I’ll agree with that. In the Tommy household when you spend less than you make you’re doing the right thing. How large has the defecit grown on 43′s watch? That’s all I’m trying to express. Facts are Facts man.

  14. PCD says:

Tommy, while Bush has let the congress spend like a pothead in a pot bazaar, it is the Congress that consistently overspends. I will remind you that a Democrat Congress under Clinton raised taxes on every thing including Social Security benifits paid to retirees. They ran increasing deficits until Newt and the 94 gang were ELECTED the majority and cut the spending visa vis receipts. That helped trigger the first budget surpluses we’ve had.

Now if you want to change out Denny Hastert, I’m all for that. There are some tight fisted GOP back benchers that CAN do the job better.

  15. Baklava says:

In the government world when revenues rise but people are misinformed to believe that revenues must’ve dropped to create a defecit because tax rates dropped then all we can do is keep trying to set the record straight. But when you can’t grasp the concept we can only shake our heads.

Revenues have gone up MORE than expenditures did last year. The problem is that generally over the last 5 years expenditures went up more than revenues. This is a LEFT of CENTER government grows too much problem as I’ve said all along. You can’t RAISE tax rates to fix the problem and call yourself fiscally responsible. You simply need to slow the growth of spending or cut spending. UNFORTUNATELY, Republicans lower growth of spending of Medicaid from 7.9% increase to a 7.4% increase and the PRESS and the Democrats call it a cut and slam the Republicans for their screwed up priorities. People like you and GBA eat up that stuff because you either a) like to be misinformed or b) don’t trust the information coming from folks like me c) don’t care what the true information is….

Yes. Facts are facts and what I expressed was a sentiment about McCain not voting for Bush’s tax cuts (which has higher revenues coming into the government) and you turned into a totally separate conversation about your “feeling” about fiscal responsibility. Where do lowering tax rates = non fiscal responsibility? You obviously have FAILED to understand that they do not equal each other even though you’ve been told repeatedly. Why the failure when it is rather simple? Are you trying to grasp the concept?
