As North Korea ratchets up the rhetoric. Via Reuters:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States has moved its ground-based interceptor missile defense system from test mode to operational amid concerns over an expected North Korean missile launch, a U.S. defense official said on Tuesday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed a Washington Times report that the Pentagon has activated the system, which has been in the developmental stage for years.
“It’s good to be ready,” the official said.
U.S. officials say evidence such as satellite pictures suggests Pyongyang may have finished fueling a Taepodong-2 missile, which some experts said could reach as far as Alaska.
“There’s real caution in how to characterize it so as to not be provocative in our own approach,” the defense official said of the move to activate the system.
The Pentagon and State Department have said a North Korean missile launch would be seen as “provocative.”
Yeah, I’ll say.

Provocative is a way of “life” in NK’s twisted pedophile dictatorship. He showed his, when he fired over Japanese turf a year or so back. Now we show him ours.
It is a language /communique that he can grasp fully. Negotiations complete, unless he is a slower learner than the Saddamized Whosane. Blink mode on.
Wait for the apologists to complain about S.Korea being endangered.
Blow ‘em up!
I was thinking about this whole brouhaha, and I think I’ve figured out exactly why ol’Kim is doing this now. There are a couple of reasons.
First, he is such a massive ego driven megalomaniac that he can’t stand the fact that he’s not been the center of attention lately (I’m so ronery, so vely ronery). He’s been basically ignored by the world while everyone has been pulling their hair out over Iraq and Iran. He needs the attention he’s getting from this stunt. This also probably means something bad is happening internally, he feels threatened or the people are getting restless or some other looming disaster threatens, famine, whatever.
Secondly, and maybe the most probable, he is scared witless by recent events in Iraq. He is constantly in the grips of complete paranoia, Kim Jong Il is wound up tighter than an idiot’s watch ever since we zapped Zarqawi (Durka durka mohammed jihad!). Remember that back in the opening days of the Iraq War, when we thought we knew where Hussein was, we staged precision air strikes and blew the stuffing out of some protected underground bunkers as well as houses. Kim, after this, apparently went incommunicado for several months, he went completely to ground, no one could tell where he was, he basically hid and moved around a lot. He was terrified we were going to do the same to him. Now that we did the same to Zarqawi, someone even harder to find than Hussein, and whacked him successfully, propeller-head’s beanie must be really spinning now. He’s doing this as a threat to try and bluff us to leave him alone or he’ll nuke a city or something. It’s his fear talking.
Now the question is, will he actually launch. Will he get what he wants by threatening it only, and be either smart enough or afraid enough to not want to push his luck, or will he think, perhaps rightly so, that we will wuss out and not strike back in any significant way, either militarily or economocally (we’re aready doing that I think), so he might as well do it and get the most mileage out of it he can. Or is he doing the same thing we are, sitting here wondering if the technology will work or will embarass us?
Lots to ponder. The next few days/weeks will prove interesting.

Perhaps there’ll be an “accident” if they try to launch…
