Good points by all. I would add that despite words to the contrary, I don’t believe world opinion or even the opinions of certain factions within our country, should hold much weight in the face of what seems to be a clear path to be followed. Why should we let other countries have input into our determination of what is right and wrong, moral or immoral, in how we defend ourselves and our allies? There’s a portion of our nation that indeed has the will to confront the dangers posed by the insane in the Mid East. That they don’t have the full support of their own is shameful beyond description. What confounds me the most and makes me most anxious, is the fact that no one has stepped forward to grab that baton that Bush must soon hand off. It would be nice to see a candidate speak in favor of fighting this noble fight and using this time to express why it needs to be fought now.

OK, major blog flog here: I wrote and posted Can we win wars today? on July 23rd! In it I noted the difference between defeating Japan and Germany, and our victory against Iraq and the various Israeli victories against the Arabs. Germany and Japan stayed defeated because we killed millions of their people, and most of the fighting age men. In Iraq, we defeated the Ba'ath Party government, but did not defeat the country of Iraq, and the vast majority of their fighting age men survived. Israel has done exactly the same thing: it has run roughshod over the Arabs, until they asked for a cease-fire, but the Arabs never surrendered, never gave up their goals of destroying Israel, and most of their fighting age men survived.

It’s true: The western nations have lost the guts to fight for their own survival. Too worried about political considerations, too involved in re-elections and campaign donations, fearful of the PC monitors who should, in a sane society, be hooted from the public square. Look at the dancing around the subject of Illegal Aliens. This is a part of National Defense. It is Constitutionally mandated, unlike so much of what the Federal government does, yet is skirted for fear of losing a single vote. Even if that vote is cast by people who have no legal right to cast it.

Fear is what we have for a governmental direction. And it could spell the demise of Freedom, just as surely as the Europeans are succumbing to the Islamist invaders within. Surrender is becoming the only acceptable option to the cowards of the Left and their willing dupes.

John Podhoretz has eloquently put into words something that’s been rolling around in my mind for some time now, the apparent inability of many in the luxury addicted, softened, overly introspective, and weak willed Western democracies to be able to focus on what’s important and muster enough will to actually defeat a brutal, barbaric enemy. Sadly, many in the West have “evolved” to the point where they seem to believe it’s morally superior to not take your own side in a struggle, and that this is more important than survival. The end result of decades of leftist nihilism and post post modern philosophy coming home to roost. If you approach this from the standpoint of natural selection, it’s becoming clear that the West has “evolved” to the point where it’s no longer viable or capable of surviving the rigors of natural selection, and this bodes ill for us, and for the cause of freedom and human rights for the entire world. The failure to muster the kind of grit necessary to fight a brutal war in a brutal way against the barbarians at the gate will result in a world that’s far far worse for everyone in it, much like the Dark Ages followed the fall of the Roman Empire to their barbarians.

As Roger Waters so eloquently put it, we have “amused ourselves to death.”
