Immigration falls off the map for the GOP

This is nice.

Not.

Well ok, I have a mixed view on it. On one hand, I can appreciate not wanting to hurry through legislation that has not been well-thought out before the elections. At least 2007 will not be an election year where a lot of politicians on both sides of the aisle are posturing for votes like this year.

On the other hand, can the debate on it in Congress still not be ongoing, and then picked up again when the new session of Congress starts next January?

They are all afraid of it.

    And that sucks.

Illegal immigration is a very tough issue. I think everyone in this country should be accounted for, and pay thier fair share of taxes. Not sure where you draw the line on who to kick out. Someone should start a blog to discuss illegal immigration that takes into account all sides of the issue, and come up with a solution. And yes, I will get coffee cups thrown at me by both sides of the aisle for making this statement.

  3. CZ says:

The only solution is to close the border first and then kick all illegal invaders out period! It makes me sick that nobody has the guts to do the right thing. :-&

Politicians have the nerve to send our military into a foreign country to die and then refuse to protect and control out own border?

Nothing short of gutless. My party is disappointing me bigtime.~:>

“— As Congress returns to work this week after a month-long break, little progress is imminent on an issue that leaders of both parties have identified as urgent: illegal immigration.”

These are the same people who BTW, have voted themselves a pay raise, do not pay into social security and draw over $15,000 a month retirement even if you are a certifiable one term Cynthidiot! Entitlement politics are part and parcel as to the why these so-called tough issues are not being addressed. There are no visible signs of legitimate teamwork in the mad hatters club. Even if they were paid based upon work performance like the rest of us, I have serious doubts to what they’re capabilities consist of, excluding the pathetic and traiterous actions in some cases. (Harry Reid comes to mind)

There’s no sense of urgency because they are quite comfortable. I’ve taken a month or two off but usually it was time needed to heal broken bones. When I was able, I was back at it because just like most of us who work for a living, no worky no eaty.
Elected officials have somehow managed to adapt to the posh environment they are forced to survive in. Hell I don’t blame them for that, in time I might adjust to being lazy as well, but before I left town on holiday, I’d like to think I did my best to secure our borders. Sort of like shutting the front door on your house. You maybe don’t need to lock it but if it’s ajar, all kinds of furry Al-animals can get in.

I smell a 1776 wind on the horizon.

    Ditto!! :d

  6. NC Cop says:

What I do find interesting is that the democrats where the ones who stirred up this whole “The border isn’t secure!!!” stuff. Now they are running around telling people the republicans are racist for trying to stop illegal immigration. Talk about gutless.

My party is shooting itself in the foot if they aren’t even gonna TALK ABOUT THIS when they go back in session. There’s gonna be alot of pissed off conservatives and they’d better listen on this break before the elections or they are toast.
The problem is there are no Tom Tancredo’s around, too damn bad, I’m getting more and more pissed off about this.
If they keep comin over here we will be overun and they will take over our government and run it into the ground like Mexico, just wait, its happending now and God knows how many smugglers have been paid to get terrorists over.
DO SOMETHING GUYS or I shall be forsed to move to Australia , don’t think many Mexicanos go there much.
Just call me alex baldwin, jr.

My position hasn’t changed much since 2005. The Republicans are doing nothing well except semi-fighting the WOT well (‘cept why are no aircraft carriers steaming towards the Persian Gulf?), and putting some judges on the bench.

That’s not enough! I can’t believe I’m actually thinking this, but I am. Republicans need to be woken up and do what we elected them to do. If they won’t, then maybe it’s time to let the Democrats take over and screw up America like they did in the late ’70s. In the long run, we got Reagan because they are so bad at governing. We need Reagan again, and there is not a spine left in the current crop of Republican Senators (Coburn and Tancredo excepted). Maybe putting them out to pasture will benefit the party. Keeping them in power certainly hasn’t.

And Bush is not spineless on the issue, he’s just on the other side! “Let’s not give them amnesty, let’s allow them to stay in the United States for as long as they want and give them an option to pursue citizenship if they so desire. But no amnesty!”

I’ve heard people say that there’s probably going to be another huge terrorist attack before Americans wake up and accept the dire situation terrorism is causing. I don’t know about that, but perhaps a cataclysmic blow to our current Republican Senators (not Congressmen, most of them are great) will shake them back onto the right side of the aisle.

I no longer fall for the “imagine how much worse things would be if the Democrats were in charge” idea. It’s too similar to the preposterous statement that Democrats use: “We would work harder to solve (insert problem here). The Republican’s ideas don’t work, ours will.”

    Kevin said,

“Republicans need to be woken up and do what we elected them to do. If they won’t, then maybe it’s time to let the Democrats take over and screw up America like they did in the late ’70s.”

I’ve been hearing this a lot lately on the talk radio shows (Unless it’s always Kevin calling in–*snicker*). I think this is an attitude that could hurt tremendously if acted upon in this manner, because it isn’t just immigration that would be messed up. Let the Dems in and anything you may have supported could/would be reversed (think tax cuts, Patriot Act, etc) and things you don’t support would be likely to pass or get closer to passing. The real answer lies in studying new conservtive candidates and pressing for answers on questions we want answered, and letting incumbents know just how pissed you are. Imagine being inundated with nasty mail, email or phone calls because you weren’t producing results expected. They MUST hear from us—doesn’t matter if one is your rep or someone elses’s, if that rep ain’t getting it done, call or write, or support his GOP opponent.

As to the immigration problem, I guess I’d prefer nothing rather than the wrongthing from our legislators. But I would accept a partial. If they were to simply legislate on putting up a fence or wall without addressing current illegals, I’d take it.

I don’t know where I heard it, but I like it: We can’t deport them all? Well how many CAN we deport and when do we get started? I think the only righteous path is to send them back as we find them, to stand in line like they’re supposed to. Buchanan suggested halting immigration until it’s all straightened out. I wouldn’t mind some form of that idea, thought perhaps not across the board–tweak for certain circumstances. Also it goes without saying that those who hire illegals must be punished in a manner that prevents a second time. I did hear about punishing landlords, but I would hope that they were given assistance in determining citizen status.

  10. forest hunter says:

Kevin, the donks in the 70′s WAS a terrorist attack of sorts. We just didn’t recognize it as one. If you see what and how we got sandbagged by the still acting saboteur ex-president Carter, the goals of terrorists and his were/are very much in alignment. As to your tongue in cheek (I hope) proposal, “…then maybe it’s time to let the Democrats take over and screw up America like they did in the late ’70s.”, I’m not sure that we’d recover as well as we have from their first assault on America.

Don’t be disheartened by idiots or even our own fools. Bloggers like you and the others need to keep pushing for sanity (You too Sanity-heh) in order to bring those at the helm back into the light and away from the deep rooted practice of entitlement politics.

  11. sanity says:

Seriously I feel what Kevin is talking about.

When we think of Republican Leadership, I don;t see any.

If the Republican party could get as organized as the Democrats, including when it comes to supporting or not supporting something, you would see much more party unity and more things passing.

But as I see it, Democrats hold strong with very few if any that cross party lines, where as I see alot of party line crossing with the Republicans.

We call Kerry a flipflopper, but all we have to do is look at the republican party.

Where is the message we are putting out, when all the Democrats can put out is “Vote for Change”. Why are we not just hammering them completely in the ground whenever they say that phrase by saying…

    WHAT CHANGE?
    WHAT ARE YOU OFFERING?
    WHERE IS YOU PLAN?!?!?

Why does it seem like the Republican party is wishwashy on any kind of real message, especially when all the democrats can offer is “Vote for Change”?

Want to know why it loks like Republicans may do badly? It is most likely because most of the voters, especially their own base, feel as if they have been abandoned by them and that those Republicans have no spine.

I am not talking slandering oppenents, or attacking them personally, but dammit get your asses out there and attack the stupidity that the democrats are putting out there.

And as badly as republicans are performing in my eyes, I have to feel FORCED to vote for their butts again because voting for some democrat with no message or ideas of their own will harm the country even more.

So what does that tell these lazy, idiotic republicans that really should be voted out of office, that we HAVE to vote for them because the only option would be voing for a democrat and that would be even worse? They will see they have the Base between a rock and a hard place…..until the Base completely gets fed up with them an votes them out or stays home and doesn’t vote.

Tell me this….what else can we do to get the message across to these republicans to grow a friggin spine, to start geting their butts out there and attacking the lame democrat message of “vote for change” that tells you NOTHING of what that change is….

Here is a message to come out and attack that emssage with….

The Democrats are stating that a vote for them is a vote for change….well they are correct, it would be a change….a change for the WORSE.

DEOMCRATS ARE WEAK ON THE ECONOMY, and WEAK THE DEFENSE OF AMERICA!!

Your vote for change will be just that, A CHANGE FOR THE WORSE!

Good one! I also heard Ann Coulter(?) say, “You are saying that since we can’t catch them all, we should just give up? Well, let’s give up on catching murderers and rapists, since we can’t catch them all either.”

I don’t know. Marshall, Forest and Sanity all seem much more confident than I am, and I hate to be the pessimist. Maybe I’m looking at it from the wrong perspective. Perhaps if we instead figured out a way to replace McCain, Chafey, Snow, the other one in Maine, Frist, and Specter with actual Republicans, the problem would be solved. Might as well unload Stevens as well; I’m betting he’s about to be involved in a scandal of some sort.

You know what would make me a staunch supporter of the Republican Party again? If the Senate adopted the House Immigration Bill, and brought it to the floor. And if the Democrats voted against cloture, let the filibuster start. From now until election day, 24/7, non-stop. It’s not like they are passing any worthwile laws anyway, and they’ll get much more publicity this way than if they go home and campaign.

Barring that unlikely occurrence, I feel like I’m just voting for which party gets to take home our taxpayer money, not which one is better for Americans.

  13. stoo says:

Yesterday, I was certain that Frist was making a mistake. But if I’m reading this story right, Frist is dropping the idea of comprehensive immigration reform, which he President seems so insistent on, and leaning towards the house version.
