Not only is the AC-130 a fixed wing aircraft (which should have been obvious to the media reporting this – Army and Marines fly helicopter gunships, but not the USAF) but it’s one of the weapon systems denied to troops in Somalia by Clinton.

You know, when we got our noses bloodied and brave stalwart Slick Willie got blisters on his feet hightailing out of there. And somehow giving bin Laden and his ilk the idea that Americans are wussies.

The AC-130 is the grandson of Spooky, the AC-47 I saw work so well in Vietnam.

The AC-130 isn’t a helicopter, it’s a 4 engine turboprop transport plane loaded with 20 mm mini-cannon, 40 cannon, and a 105 mm howitzer. They can put a serious serious hurtin’ on something. They can loiter up out of sight and sound and survey the battlefield with their infrared and other sensors, then come in and blast pinpoint targets to hell and back as well as saturate area targets.

This is the kind of mission this plane is ideal for, and it’s good to hear they are making good use of it. This plane absolutely scares the pants off our enemy.
