IAEA: Iran continues to defy the UN on nukes

Via AP:

VIENNA, Austria – Iran continues to defy U.N. Security Council demands to scrap its uranium enrichment program and has instead expanded its activities, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Wednesday in a finding that sets the stage for new council sanctions.

The report from Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the U.N.’s nuclear watchdog agency, also faulted Tehran for blocking IAEA efforts to probe suspicious nuclear activities, saying that meant it could not “provide assurances about … the exclusively peaceful nature” of its atomic program.

And, in new and worrying phrasing, it expressed concern about its “deteriorating” understanding of unexplored aspects of the program, despite four years of a probe sparked by revelations that Tehran had been clandestinely developing enrichment and other nuclear activities that could be used to make weapons for nearly two decades.

Now, I wonder who will be the first lefty to whine that “well, just because they are expanding their uranium enrichment program doesn’t mean they have nukes”? And as I’ve asked before, will this latest news spur la Pelosi to change her mind about a possible visit to Iran to have ‘talks’ with officials there (especially considering how they treat women)? Will we see a reversal from Wesley Clark on that same suggestion of ‘talking’ to Iran? Will Democrats who have been trying to downplay the threat of Iran by essentially accusing the President of lying about how serious a threat they are finally come out at last and admit they were wrong?

I know the answers to all but the first one, and so do you. So frustrating to know that the US Congress continues to dither while Iran grows more and more defiant.

    The oil markets seem to be telling us that things in the middle east (not limited to Iran) figure to be hotter than normal this summer. The Israelis have said they will not tolerate a nuclear armed Iran, but Olmert is seen as a weak player, still trying to cut deals with Hamas. If the recent fire in Lebanon spreads south into Judea, the Israeli government is going to be forced to fish or cut bait. The USN has two carriers (along with the usual supporting cast) in the Persian Gulf. Coalition forces have just discovered a huge weapons cache outside of Baghdad, and along with it a vast haul of IRANIAN currency.

    Y’all do the math… **==

  2. Tango, you have a link to that news? And let’s not forget all the weapons that Iran has shipped to Iraq and Afghanistan. And yet they’re not a threat right? Can I have some of the truthberry koolaid that is such a hit on the left?

    Darn it!!!

    Iran is using it’s nuclear program for peaceful means!! What’s wrong with you guys! Just because they are violating U.N. demands in regards to it’s nuclear program, just because they are undermining our efforts in Iraq and killing our troops, and just because the pres. of Iran has said he is going to wipe Israel off the face of the map, doesn’t mean their hostile to us or our allies! Geez!!!!

    Can’t we just talk to them?!?!??!?! 8-|

    Vega$ Art Guy: I heard about the Iranian cash on ABC news radio this morning, but the story doesn’t appear on their website. And there’s nothing about it on Fox News either. So either the story wasn’t properly authenticated, or else it’s being “stepped on” for reasons we can only guess at. As for the two USN carrier groups operating in the Gulf, that’s not exactly breaking news; that story is being reported by most major news organizations. **==
