I remember when I heard this speech – and thought at the time “yeah, right! Suuuuure they’re just gonna tear it down!” Damned if ole RONALDUS MAXIMUS wasn’t right yet again. RIP amigo – you are surely missed!

Not to be confused with Reagen’s “Tear down this wall or I’ll blow your head clean off…” which didn’t make it into his final speech. Too bad.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Top administration officials said the speech was all wrong. Too provocative, said the National Security Council. Too tough, said the State Department.

The president overruled his advisers and, as he rode through the streets of West Berlin on June 12, 1987, he told an aide that his speech at the Brandenburg Gate was simply “the right thing to do.”

Just goes to show you that RR Greatest President of our times, understood that the right thing to do isn’t always the easy thing to do. I have to stand in agreement, Ronald Reagan was the greatest President in the 20th century, sorry Teddy but you are right there behind him. – Lorica

ST, thanks for posting this. The Reagan Presidential Foundation sent out CDs within the last few days to donors with the entire 26-minute speech on it. I’ve already listened to mine four times.
