Jaw-dropper of the week: Rep Murtha says the surge is working

Posted by: ST on November 30, 2007 at 11:20 am

John Bresnahan at The Politico examines Murtha’s latest remarks on the surge and contrasts them with defeatist remarks he’s made about the surge in the past.

The money quote actually comes at the end, from a Democrat other than Murtha:

“This could be a real headache for us,” said one top House Democratic aide, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “Pelosi is going to be furious.”

She won’t be the only furious Democrat.

In the meantime, the Congress’ failure to send a clean war funding bill to the President is already having a negative effect on our military which, I suspect, is exactly their intent.

This is “supporting the troops” – Democrat style.

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty. – John F. Kennedy, Friday, January 20, 1961

First, it was amazing that anyone so at odds with John F Kennedy would ever receive an award from the Kennedy Library & Museum, but now we see that there never was any courage involved.
Murtha should give back the Profiles in Courage award.

Unfortunately, Murtha had to quickly “qualify” his remarks:

Murtha Moves to Tone Down Surprise Assessment That Iraq ‘Surge Is Working’

A day after admitting to reporters that “the surge is working,” Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., one of the most ardent critics of President Bush’s war policy, issued a statement Friday softening that assessment, this time calling it “a window of opportunity.”

“The fact remains that the war in Iraq cannot be won militarily, and that we must begin an orderly redeployment of U.S. forces from Iraq as soon as practicable.”

So let’s see, before the surge it was “It’s a civil war! Civil war! Disaster! Death! Destruction! The only answer is to pull our troops out!”

Now it’s “The surge is working! Violence is down! The only answer is to pull our troops out!”

Anyone see a pattern here? If there is any other evidence that the dems are only concerned with their politics rather than winning this war, I don’t know what it is.

    Disgraceful.

Neo You have to search pretty hard these days to find a Democrat that would believe that quote from JFK. These are the people that did everything they could to interfer with Ronaldus Magnus all the way to the end of the Soviet Empire. But yet stood arm in arm with the criminal Bill Clinton.

Murtha must of woke up sometime this week and realized that you just can’t keep beating up on the military and not have some serious back lash. I personally hope that Murtha is done for when it comes to re-election time. Just like Terry Branstadt gave Iowa to the Dem party, and George Ryan gave Illinois to the Dem party, I hope that Murtha surrenders his seat to a good conservative Rep. – Lorica

  4. PCD says:

3, Not only that quote, Lorica, but this one, too. “Ask not what America can do for you. Ask what you can do for America.”

JFK must have been just talking to Teddy as the Democrat party has been running away from that quote since McGovern.

LOL =)) So true PCD, so very true. – Lorica

  6. Great White Rat says:

From those two JFK quotes, you’d have to consider that if the man were alive today, he’d be a right-of-center Republican.

…not to mention his tax cuts and economic policy…
