ST
You have a good point. The only calls that I got to get out and vote came from Michelle Obama asking me to vote early and telling me that I could register and vote at the same time. Obviously that's not true here in NC, but more importantly I've been a registered Republican here in Charlotte for 18 years and the only contact I had was from a dem.
NC Cop, as I tell my children, Ohio is a good place to be from but not to live. I proud to say 3 of my 4 called me election night more upset with the results than I was.

All of the northerners move to the south after retirement, or before, due mostly to HIGH TAXES!!!! Then the morons come down here and vote in the same type of people who raised their taxes up north, BRILLIANT!!!!!!!

NC Cop, it's the libs, not all northerners. I'm very much looking forward to the day I can pull up stakes and head south for good. And I can promise you I won't be voting for leftists then, either. :)

I've said this here before: basically, liberals do not understand cause and effect. They live in cities like Philly or Boston. They see the schools turning into jokes, criminals running loose on the streets, and taxes going through the roof, and it never occurs to them that they VOTED for this. They're just too dumb to catch on. Instead, they assume it's someone else's fault (that's also in the liberal DNA, I think). Meanwhile, they see another place where taxes are still low, schools still teach, and you don't need a bullet-proof vest to walk on the street - a place like NC - and think, I'd rather live THAT kind of life. So they move there and promptly repeat the same voting mistakes that ruined their old states. And they'll still never catch on.

It's not just in the south. There are parts of north Jersey that were well-run, good places to live, with sound budgets when I was growing up there. Then they were overrun by migrants from NYC. New Hampshire has turned blue because of the influx of people from Massachusetts who liked the low taxes and better quality of life, and who are busy destroying it.

It really does present a strong argument for making everyone who wants to vote pass some sort of test on basic politics, history, and economics. The fact that an idiot who thinks that once Obama's elected she won't have to pay her mortgage or pay to put gas in her car is able to cancel out your informed vote makes me ill.

ST says:

And along with that, get back to their conservative roots

Exactly so. For years, we have been told that running as a principled conservative was divisive and a sure way to lose. The MSM and the professional punditry lectured us that America longed for a centrist candidacy, someone who could get past the partisan bickering, appeal to independents and moderates, and unite the nation.

You couldn't come up with a candidate who fit that bill better than McCain. His bipartisan bona fides are unquestioned. Most of the headlines he's received in the past decade were for attacking other Republicans, especially conservatives. There was even talk of him running for VP with Kerry four years ago.

Obama, on the other hand, ran as a hard-line leftist. He has no history of working with the GOP and has no intention of starting now. He's so far left that some of his campaign HQs were adorned with Cuban flags and pictures of Che Guevara.

If the conventional wisdom was right, this should have been a blowout for McCain. So what happened? The mushy middle that McCain relied on dissolved. He found out on Tuesday that he really had no base - and only Sarah Palin got the GOP base on board, finally and reluctantly.

Conclusion: ST is right. Stay true to your base and your roots, and stand for something.

Dan McLaughlin says much the same thing, only better, here: Karl Rove has been vindicated.

greg, don't despair. If the GOP can launch aggressive GOTV efforts on the level of BO, we can turn this state red again. 15% more Dems than Republicans are registered here, which would make you think this year would be a blow out, but he won by less than 15K votes. All hope is not lost.

Edited to add: And along with that, get back to their conservative roots. But I think that almost goes without saying at this point.

The numbers in our state are changing fast. One of the most telling numbers is that McCrory couldn't carry Mecklenburg County. I moved here in part to get away from the Ohio liberal political climate but it seems to have followed me.
