Well, it turns out that our friends on the left thought exactly the same thing; they thought that Mr Obama was deliberately lying to everybody, to win the election. So, when he said that yes, he favored some form of civil unions — pretty much the position President Bush has taken — but opposed same-sex marriage, they didn’t believe him, they thought it was all a lie — insert wink icon here — to fool us bitter folks clinging to God and guns.

Then, sha-zamm! it turns out that Mr Obama was actually telling the truth on that particular issue, and they feel that they’ve been betrayed.
