As the debate over whether or not Caroline Kennedy is qualified to be appointed to take Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat rages on, Victor Davis Hanson tackles a related debate on the comparisons that have been made between Kennedy and Gov. Palin in terms of the treatment received by both from the mainstream media, and nails it:
But, no, the real embarrassment proves to be the media itself that apparently can’t see this weird unfolding self-incriminating morality tale: It is not just that Palin is conservative, Kennedy politically-correct (e.g., pro-abortion, gun control, gay marriage, etc), or Palin a newcomer to public attention, Kennedy a celebrity since childhood. Rather it is the aristocratic value system of most NY-DC journalists themselves who apparently still assume that old money, status, and an Ivy-League pedigree are reliable barometers of talent and sobriety, suggesting that the upper-East Side Kennedy’s public ineptness is an aberration, a bad day, a minor distraction, while Palin’s charisma and ease are superficial and a natural reflection of her Idaho sports journalism degree.
A few generations ago, Democrats would have opposed Palin but appreciated her blue-collar story, and applauded a working mom who out-politicked entrenched and richer male elites. But now the new aristocratic liberalism has adopted the values of the old silk-stocking Republicans of the 1950s—and so zombie-like worship rather than question entitlement.
Read the rest here.
I should note that, although the NYT was initially cold to Caroline Kennedy’s candidacy, they seem to be warming up a little, unlike the NY Daily News.

Well I’m a fan of both Sarah Palin and Caroline Kennedy. They are what they are. They decide what’s right for themselves. They go ahead and do what they want to do.
Do the elitists scoff at the Palin “jes plain folks” demeanor? Of course. And in the year now drawing to its close, Sarah Palin got a chance to meet many of the elitists, and ironically give career boosts to Tina Fey and Katie Couric. Did she make some blunders? Certainly. She’s learned never again to buy clothes retail, I’m sure.
As for Caroline, she’s now going to get a chance to meet many of the “jes plain folks” in some of the parts of New York State she’s never seen. I’m sure she’ll profit from the experience, and anyway, she’ll no longer have to wonder quite what it is that the simple folks do. And if nothing else, she’ll provide fodder for that chronicler of Americana, Joyce Carol Oates.
After all, Caroline’s story already sounds like one of her novels–daughter of a murdered public figure; years in isolation that created Garboesque mystery; a sudden emergence into public life; enemy of another great American political dynasty; gets her job because of a governor who’s governor only because his predecessor was involved in a sex scandal.
Write it, Ms. Oates!
Except that George W. Bush had all of these, and was (and is) still treated by the journalistic aristocracy as if he were a knuckle-dragging baboon. Partly, that’s due to the Texas accent, as a southern accent is proof positive of stupidity to these accent bigots (unless it’s Hillary faking one in front of a black church). But mostly, it’s because he doesn’t subscribe to their religious sacraments, like political correctness or global warming.
Sarah Palin is all about what the Democrats pretend to be, but are not. Caroline Kennedy is all about what the Democrats pretend to oppose, but actually embrace.
Good point. He was obviously an exception to the rule.
What really bugs me is how the MSM is giving Princess Caroline a relative pass concerning lack of experience, voting record and inarticulateness, especially after they savaged Gov. Sarah Palin, a woman of actual accomplishments.
Guess what? The liberals, and the Dem party, harken back to the aristocrats to begin with! Check your history. That is why liberals have an unshakeable sense of their own self-righteousness and superiority. The Republican party was formed in part through the abolitionist movement. Liberals are aristocrats in sheep’s clothing.
The Kennedys went from tragic heros to clowns in a single generation. Must be some sort of record.
