God bless Victor Davis Hanson for so frequently and eloquently telling it like it is.  In this case, he compares press treatment of Sarah Palin and Caroline Kennedy at NRO’s Media Blog:

Except that George W. Bush had all of these, and was (and is) still treated by the journalistic aristocracy as if he were a knuckle-dragging baboon. Partly, that’s due to the Texas accent, as a southern accent is proof positive of stupidity to these accent bigots (unless it’s Hillary faking one in front of a black church). But mostly, it’s because he doesn’t subscribe to their religious sacraments, like political correctness or global warming.

Good point. He was obviously an exception to the rule.

A few generations ago, Democrats would have opposed Palin but appreciated her blue-collar story, and applauded a working mom who out-politicked entrenched and richer male elites.

Sarah Palin is all about what the Democrats pretend to be, but are not. Caroline Kennedy is all about what the Democrats pretend to oppose, but actually embrace.

Do the elitists scoff at the Palin “jes plain folks” demeanor? Of course. And in the year now drawing to its close, Sarah Palin got a chance to meet many of the elitists, and ironically give career boosts to Tina Fey and Katie Couric. Did she make some blunders? Certainly. She’s learned never again to buy clothes retail, I’m sure.

As for Caroline, she’s now going to get a chance to meet many of the “jes plain folks” in some of the parts of New York State she’s never seen. I’m sure she’ll profit from the experience, and anyway, she’ll no longer have to wonder quite what it is that the simple folks do. And if nothing else, she’ll provide fodder for that chronicler of Americana, Joyce Carol Oates.

After all, Caroline’s story already sounds like one of her novels–daughter of a murdered public figure; years in isolation that created Garboesque mystery; a sudden emergence into public life; enemy of another great American political dynasty; gets her job because of a governor who’s governor only because his predecessor was involved in a sex scandal.

Write it, Ms. Oates!
