I’m starting to feel warm and fuzzy all over after reading this:
Officials of Barack Obama’s administration have drafted a letter to Iran from the president aimed at unfreezing US-Iranian relations and opening the way for face-to-face talks, the Guardian has learned.
The US state department has been working on drafts of the letter since Obama was elected on 4 November last year. It is in reply to a lengthy letter of congratulations sent by the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on 6 November.
Diplomats said Obama’s letter would be a symbolic gesture to mark a change in tone from the hostile one adopted by the Bush administration, which portrayed Iran as part of an “axis of evil”.
It would be intended to allay the suspicions of Iran’s leaders and pave the way for Obama to engage them directly, a break with past policy.
State department officials have composed at least three drafts of the letter, which gives assurances that Washington does not want to overthrow the Islamic regime, but merely seeks a change in its behaviour. The letter would be addressed to the Iranian people and sent directly to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, or released as an open letter.
One draft proposal suggests that Iran should compare its relatively low standard of living with that of some of its more prosperous neighbours, and contemplate the benefits of losing its pariah status in the west. Although the tone is conciliatory, it also calls on Iran to end what the US calls state sponsorship of terrorism.
The letter is being considered by the new secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, as part of a sweeping review of US policy on Iran. A decision on sending it is not expected until the review is complete.
Just what should a letter say from the leader of the free world to the dictator who believes in the genocide of Jews, whose efforts at undermining the US mission in Iraq via secret ops killed US men and women as well as members of our coalition forces and civilians are no secret? Jules Crittenden has some good suggestions.
Is this the beginning of ask and he shall receive?

The Iranians remember how easy it was to “punk” Jimmy Carter (after all, his policies and lack of support for the Shah allowed the Ayatollahs to come to power), and they are smelling fresh meat, again.
Obama’s lack of executive experience was clear when he was unable to reign in his own party on the stimulus bill (the only thing bi-partisan about it was the “Nay” votes), and now it’s going to rear it’s ugly head again with some stupid letter that will legitimize a group that has terrorized its people, destroyed an ancient and beautiful culture, and sponsored terrorism the world over.
The only way he can get any support from me on this letter is if it is, in fact, an open letter to the Iranian people, does not address Iran’s leaders (as in it is not “to” them), and is very critical of their low standard of living, their support for terrorism, and the contrast with how the people lived before and after the ‘Revolution.’ And it should demand basic civil rights for non-Muslims and women (do you know a woman can’t even leave the country with out her husband’s permission?).
It isn’t going to be the collapsing economy that brings Obama down. It’s going to be his mishandling of the “Islamic jihad”, or as President Bush called it, the “war on terror”.
How about “Now run you cur, tell all the other curs that the law’s coming!!! You tell them I’m coming!!!! And hell’s coming with me you hear?!?!?! HELL’S COMING WITH ME!!!!!!!!!”
What? What’s wrong with that?
Where is any of this on display at all??? All we have seen for the month of January is same ol’ same ol’. I mean even this letter is something Carter would do. Who cares. Ahmeanie is going to laugh at it. He wants the US to accept Iran for everything it is good and bad, mostly bad. Damn it is amazing how shallow the thinking is in the Dem party. That they have to regurgitate Carter ideas is just scary. – Lorica
