Truer words were never spoken, Lorica. What Steele, McCain, even people like Romney don’t realize is that the color or print of the cloth makes no difference, it’s the cut.

They are certainly welcome in the party; just don’t run us into oblivion with the vision of the anointed (thank you, Mr. Sowell), with your double-talk, lies and the assumption we are stupid (thank you, Mr. Cain) and only you know what’s good for us.

Just to expound upon Dana and Carlos’ thoughts. GW was saved by conservative voters in both 2000 & 2004, but each time he always caucused for the moderate thinking that they would appeal to both sides. Well in 2000 we had a 50/50 split in the Senate, which was lost by jumpin’ Jim Jeffords. In 2002 we won back the majority which was hit broadside in 2004 as GW was backing more moderate candidates, which some of the stupidest laws were coming from. In 2006 we lost our majority and in 2008 we surrendered both majorities and the presidency. Seems to me the further to the left our candidates went the fewer votes they got, and McCain got the drumming of a lifetime from a guy who’s only attribute was the color of his skin.

As I have said, Good Bye Mr. Specter, don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. True conservatism is it’s own moderation. Who wants the government to intrude into our daily lives. Very few people want the big brother government that we seem to be getting these days, but yet the party that supports this type of government is winning so maybe if someone was bright enough, they could figure out what the people already know, Give the people a true and definable difference and let the voters make the choice. – Lorica

Arlen Spector is all about power…ego and arrogance. If you follow this man around PA he has a huge entourage ready to massage and pander to whoever shows up.

He is doing this basically for the power. He knows he barely beat Toomey in the last primary and he got the latest “polls” that say he is behind with Toomey in the primary race. He has gotten reelected here in PA because of his LIBERAL slant.

He “left” the GOP and now he slams the GOP for going extremely to the right? Right wing extremist…sounds like he agrees with Napolitano’s memo.

Time for this RINO to be put out to pasture…

Carlos is correct: the GOP elite have moved to the left as a whole. Specter just happened to move more then most. He, and they, have lost their bearings while looking for quick wins and appeasement, which gets them nothing.

Actually, no, Mr. Honorable Senator, sir, the Republican Party has moved slightly to the left as a whole. It is you, sir, who has moved precipitously, and that to the left.

And Neo, “so what exactly did Specter gain in the short run ?”, just follow the money. Good advice any time one is discussing the ways and means of any politician, from local councilman to POTUS.

The Democrats learned their lesson the hard way, making room for moderates in states that don’t follow the liberal line. See Nelson, Landrieu, Lincoln and others.

Once the Nelsons, Landrieus, and Lincolns get to DC, they govern like Pelosi. In fact, that’s the game that Tom Daschle played for years; pretend to be a moderate back “home” and be one of the most-liberal Senators in DC.

Obviously, Patrick J. Leahy isn’t about to give up his chairmanship at Judiciary and with today’s announcement, Specter can’t keep the Rank Member position, so what exactly did Specter gain in the short run ?
Shouldn’t he have waited till the filing deadline in PA before announcing ?

For Pennsylvanians, Specter gave up his pivotal position that could have given him incredible leverage in the Senate just so he could run again.
