Aye, and there’s the rub. How many more McCains and Doles, or even Bushes can the Republicans throw at their constituencies before they really do become irrelevant?

The only reason W won in 2000 was he claimed to be a conservative. The only reason he won in 2004 was he was not a dangerous America-hater. But the out-of-control spending of Republicans caught up with the socialist-lite McCain, and now I know the conservative base of the party will want bonafides before committing to another of the party’s leadership’s candidates. “What I will do” has no meaning now, only “what I have done.”

This is the only thing I found good in the “leaked” version of the Kennedy bill ..
The bill defines an “eligible individual” as “a citizen or national of the United States or an alien lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence or an alien lawfully present in the United States.”
It does leave a door the size of Texas for political games with the definition of “ lawfully present”.
