No wonder the Chinese laughed at Secretary Geithner when he said that China’s assets are safe on June 1. Kirk had been there the week before (May 22) telling them not to believe anything the US government says.

I fear that this will be Kirk’s “macaca moment,” like that racial slur caught on video that sunk George Allen’s Senate race. He presented the Illinois Democrats with a nice little video clip for future campaign ads. He might have been a good Senator, but he blew it.

As for Kirk’s remarks, two points: first, it is laughable to see leftists suddenly worried about running America down when overseas, considering their track record for as long as I can remember.

Second, it’s not like Kirk told the Chinese something they don’t know. They may be brutal statists, but they’re very smart. They’ve already laughed Geithner out of town for trying to feed them the same nonsense that our gullible domestic leftists swallow. They’ve also told Pelosi and Hillary to put a cork in the AGW foolishness too – China is not going to kneel at the altar of al-Gore.

The Chinese government is a lot more realistic about most things than the current assortment of leftist clucks in charge in Washington.

Mr Kirk’s assessment differed with that of Treasury Secretary Mr Timothy Geithner, who said last week on a separate visit that Chinese leaders had expressed ‘justifiable confidence’ on the future of the recession-hit US economy.

First, your analysis of the left’s reaction is spot on – why are they so unhinged at what they, as an ideological group, perfected?

That said, I would think that what we decried so many years would be as bad for us to do as for the leftist loonies, even if what we say is correct.

Was Kirk correct in his assessment? Probably. Was he correct in announcing it to the world (mostly as a campaign tactic)? No more so than Pelosi, or Clinton, or (especially) Obama.

Somewhat off topic, but allow me to add my congratulations to you MD! Science, engineering, and math departments tend to be far less ideologically rigid than the soft side of the house, which are usually populated with liberals to the almost total exclusion of conservatives. It’s nice to see you made it into academia, I’m sure your common sense, rational approach will be of great benefit to your students. Imagine, a math class that actually teaches math, instead of political activism! The mind boggles!

Kirk is pondering a run for the US Senate seat presently held by Roland Burris. That tells you all that you need to know about the Left’s unhinged reaction.

Burris will be both tough for the Democrats to unseat in the Democrat primary (I can just hear the shrieks of “Racism” coming from the so-called civil rights establishment) and tough to convince independents to vote for if he survives a primary challenge. Thus, the attacks on anyone who might threaten the Democrats’ hold on Obama’s old seat.

On a completely unrelated note: whatever prayers ST and her readers sent up on my behalf worked. I have been offered a full-time teaching position in the Mathematics Department at a local community college. So to everyone – Thank you!
