Multiple media outlets are reporting this afternoon that Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) is retiring from the Senate, effective the end of this month. The thing that makes it odd is that he had previously announced back in December that he would be retiring at the end of his term next year.
Jim Geraghty’s got a list of the different reasons that are being given for his resignation from varying sources. I suspect that the left wing hounds smell an “affair” in the air, but early indications are that it may be an issue related to another member of his family.
Another Martinez – Bob (a former FL governor) – is rumored to be the choice for Gov. Crist to replace the departing Martinez.
Sen. Martinez was not my favorite GOP Senator by far – I especially did not care for him when he briefly had the reins of the RNC, but I wish him well in his retirement.

Bye Martinez… Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.
A month or so after he is replaced we will start hearing stories about how conservatives pushed him out, or some such blah blah blah. I pray I am wrong, but I doubt it.
I don’t know why Crist just doesn’t name himself to the post. It is what he wants. Then in 2016 he can run for President, since the Barry won’t be around to run against…. we hope. – Lorica
Serious political calculations are often needed to make important decisions such as naming someone to be a seatholder for a few months…having a stable of political operatives and insiders would be critical and essential to appointing a guy with the same last name.
RC from California here..I’ll match your Mel Martinez and raise you a Barbara Boxer.
He told everyone he was retiring this year, what is all this “surprise”, August is the end of this legislative year, he said he was retiring at the end of this Legislative year, so, why all the fake surprise?
You’d think, since he was the only Cuban republican senator, he would have been somewhat more wary of socialist schemes moving our country ever closer to what he fled. Go figure.
Maybe, once he got to a position where he saw the perks for the pigs (think “Animal Farm”) he didn’t think being a little more equal was such a bad thing after all?
