RIP, Eunice Kennedy Shriver

Posted by: ST on August 11, 2009 at 9:25 am

As I’m sure you’ve already heard by now, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, mother to Maria and sister to JFK and Ted, passed away this morning at Cape Cod Hospital. She was 88.

She was a kind-hearted person who supported her Democrat-dominated family for decades, and even though she was a Democrat herself, she and her husband both were pro-life, and during the first presidential campaign of then-Governor Bill Clinton, she – along with several other prominent pro-life Democrats, signed a letter than was published in the NYT protesting the Democratic party’s pro-choice platform. She also founded the Special Olympics. Her Wiki page has extensive references to the causes she devoted herself to over her lifetime, which revolved around helping both the mentally and physically disabled, with an emphasis on children.

Most of the time when we hear of the name “Kennedy” we cringe – but hers is an exception to the rule, I think.

May she RIP.

  1. Thanks for letting us know. She was a truly wonderful woman who put her money to work for the pro-life movement and for those with disabilities. May she rest in peace.
