Obama authorizes financing for offshore drilling

Great news? Not so fast (via Fausta):

Unfortunately, the Obama Administration is financing oil exploration off Brazil.

The U.S. is going to lend billions of dollars to Brazil’s state-owned oil company, Petrobras, to finance exploration of the huge offshore discovery in Brazil’s Tupi oil field in the Santos Basin near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil’s planning minister confirmed that White House National Security Adviser James Jones met this month with Brazilian officials to talk about the loan.

The U.S. Export-Import Bank tells us it has issued a “preliminary commitment” letter to Petrobras in the amount of $2 billion and has discussed with Brazil the possibility of increasing that amount. Ex-Im Bank says it has not decided whether the money will come in the form of a direct loan or loan guarantees. Either way, this corporate foreign aid may strike some readers as odd, given that the U.S. Treasury seems desperate for cash and Petrobras is one of the largest corporations in the Americas.

[...]

The Bush Administration’s five-year plan (2007-2012) to open the outer continental shelf to oil exploration included new lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico. But in 2007 environmentalists went to court to block drilling in Alaska and in April a federal court ruled in their favor. In May, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said his department was unsure whether that ruling applied only to Alaska or all offshore drilling. So it asked an appeals court for clarification. Late last month the court said the earlier decision applied only to Alaska, opening the way for the sale of leases in the Gulf. Mr. Salazar now says the sales will go forward on August 19.

This is progress, however slow. But it still doesn’t allow the U.S. to explore in Alaska or along the East and West Coasts, which could be our equivalent of the Tupi oil fields, which are set to make Brazil a leading oil exporter. Americans are right to wonder why Mr. Obama is underwriting in Brazil what he won’t allow at home.

Sigh …

Betsy Newmark is short, sweet, and to the point:

Don’t hold your breath for Democratic support of offshore drilling off of our own coast where Americans and the American economy could reap the benefits. But off of Brazil – apparently, that’s just fine.

Contradictory short-sightedness. Just what we look for in an energy policy.

You betcha.

if you spent $30 MILLION a day every single day for 2000 years it would still not equal to obama’s $23.7 TRILLLION in financial bailouts

… the main reasons why people get poorer are because of higher taxes and inflation.

Hey, what a brilliant way to end our nation’s dependency on foreign oil! Just give everyone else more money to find more oil and keep our reserves tied up by judicial fiat.

      Brilliant! Simply brilliant!

I wonder what scumbot thought this one up?

    3. Steve Skubinna says:

Yeah, and remember how that idiot Palin and that dopey old guy McCain actually wanted to drill for oil – don’t laugh – in our own territory, where we actually owned it?

Ha ha, what morons, huh? Sure is a good thing we elected Mister Coolest, Smartest President Ever!

    4. Carlos says:

Tell ya what, Steve, let’s get on Duh-1′s newest snitch sight and propose he actually do what he accused GW of doing, and that is going in and stealing Iraq’s oil.

Shouldn’t be a moral problem for him. I mean, he’s stealing everything else, so why not that, too? All he’ll have to do is change the wording a little bit (it’d be identical to what he accused GW of, though) and Presto!, we just got more oil.

    5. Steve Skubinna says:

Yeah, I forgot to check on that whole “immoral war for oil” thing – how’d it work out, again? Oh yeah, record high fuel prices. I guess that means, when you embark upon an undeclared, immoral, illegal occupation of a sovereign nation in order to steal their stuff, you want to remember to actually, you know, steal their stuff. But no, that dumb cowboy, like an idiot, gave control of the oil to the Iraqis, on the flimsy grounds that it was theirs to begin with. Just as he actually gave control of the whole country to a democratically elected Iraqi government.

Of course, now that The Won is Prez, the whole character of the war has changed. Haven’t heard a peep from the usual suspects about how evil it all is. Aside, that is, from Cindy Sheehan who has finally realized that she’s been kicked to the curb now that Bush 43 is out of office.

Oh, and those record high fuel prices that we were solemnly assured were the result of two “oil men” in the White House – they dropped drastically well before the election, and began rising again after Obama was elected. There’s obviously a big dial beneath the desk in the Oval Office labeled “oil prices” that Obama forgot to turn down. That moron BusHitler, evil genius that he is, probably set a delayed timer on it to crank it back up to 11 before he left.

Man, that is one fiendishly clever cretin, that Dubya.

    6. Carlos says:

And with the way our glorious leader, Duh-1, is running foreign policy, look for the price of gas to top $3/gal before Jan.1, and not look back until September of next year. That’s when Zero will freeze the price of gas and rationing won’t start until after the elections in an attempt to influence them.

But it will still be GW’s fault.
