ObamaCare speech open thread (UPDATE: VIDEO ADDED)

Posted by: ST on September 9, 2009 at 7:56 pm

I brought some work home with me tonight and will not be watching the speech (excerpts here), but if you are and would like to comment on it, please feel free to do so in this thread.

Update – 10:02 PM: Here’s the video of Obama’s speech. Had initially posted the code from it but the formatting was a bit screwy.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  2. Kate says:

I a working too and watching the Phillies….who needs to sit through more speeches…I think I will listen to Obama the way he listened to Rev. Wright [-(

  3. NC Cop says:

I turned it on for a minute or two. Obama was giving the health care “horror” stories.

And they called Bush a fearmonger. Absolutely unreal.

  4. Does ObamaCare cover the sickness that occurs as a result of listening to self-serving Presidential rhetoric? If so, I might sign on for it after all …

  5. Mwalimu Daudi says:

One thing is for sure: the state-run media will declare it to be the Greatest Speech Ever. They will release snap polls designed to back up that claim and create a “bandwagon” effect.

  6. Lorica says:

This man is such a liar.

  7. Lorica says:

Anyone else notice how half hearted some of the applause has been??

  8. I can’t even keep count of the number of lies he’s told.

‘I will not demonize insurance companies’ and then he goes on to demonize insurance companies.

  9. Here he goes, in full campaign mode. ‘I inherited these problems.’

  10. Lorica says:

Aren’t some of these lies the same ones that were told the American people to get us into Social Security and Medacare??

Remember when Social Security was suppose to be just a “trustfund”?? Now we are scrambling to keep it alive, and there are 30 trillion dollars in IOUs in it’s place. It is such a joke that this man thinks that he can continue to deceive us. – Lorica

  11. Lorica says:

Any tax…I mean fee, will only be passed on to the end user. Hello?!?!?!?!

  12. Lorica says:

    LOL :)) Good Job Reps!!

  13. Lorica says:

He says he wants to work with the Reps but he hasn’t met with Rep leadership since March.

  14. Lorica says:

OMG not the Ted Kennedy letter. When all Americans can get the care that Ted got then I will stand in agreement it is time.

  15. Lorica says:

I want to vomit, Fear the Future?!?!?! The only future I fear is with this man in charge.

  16. Lorica says:

    Thank God it is over!!!

  17. Mwalimu Daudi says:

This is certainly an angry speech. If Obama were a Republican the media would be wondering aloud if he had lost his marbles and maybe the VP should step in to avoid a Constitutional crisis.

  18. Anthony says:

Nah. I’ve got better things to do, like watching Minor League AAA baseball on my PC. Right now it’s the Louisville Bats vs. Durham Bulls. Pass the hot dogs! :d

  19. Lorica says:

LOL :) Good catch MD. I liked the Rep response, concise and coherent, not full of BS platitudes, and rhetoric. – Lorica

  20. MD, he’s perpetually angry. It’s the “Chicago way” – of course the MSM wouldn’t dare call him on it. His anger is, of course, “passion.” GOP anger, OTOH, is “extremist/fringe.”

  21. Leslie says:

Derek Jeter tied the immortal Lou Gehrig for most hits by a Yankee, getting his third hit in the seventh inning of tonight’s contest with Tampa Bay, although the defending AL champs lead the Yanks 2-0 as we head for the bottom of the eighth. At the U.S. Open Tennis tournament, Perky blonde Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark defeated perky blonde Melanie Ouidin, the latest America’s Sweetheart, in straight sets.

    That is all.

  22. Mwalimu Daudi says:

    ST:

This was the first time I saw Obama wearing his anger on his sleeve. Usually he is arrogant and condescending (with such a patient tone of voice), but tonight he was furious – and didn’t seem to care if people noticed.

If he were a Republican the media would be calling him dangerously unbalanced.

  23. NC Cop says:

Congressman Yells ‘You Lie’ During Obama Speech

South Carolina Republican Rep. Joe Wilson shouted “You lie!” after Obama had talked about illegal immigrants.

Now I certainly don’t condone interrupting any president during a speech….but you can’t deny that the congressman is honest. :d

  24. Anthony says:

So, what’s the over/under on how long before the liberal bloggers, the media, and the DNC (But I repeat myself) burn in effigy the South Carolina Congressman who called Obama a liar during the speech?

I think it was an inappropriate thing to do, but Obama was indeed lying…

  25. WestWright says:

I watched a great movie on FX, the Pathfinder and during commercials went over to the BO snoozer…he is in full blown 10 yr old tantrum mode and Michele is too. SSDD, a total FU if that was all this was, ie, BO boilerplate!

  26. NC Cop says:

So, what’s the over/under on how long before the liberal bloggers, the media, and the DNC (But I repeat myself) burn in effigy the South Carolina Congressman who called Obama a liar during the speech?

Oh, no doubt. Look for Olbermann to border on a stroke with that vein popping out on his forehead and look for Ed Shultz to go into vapor lock trashing the congressman.

  27. The Rep. Joe Wilson “liar” comment has become the story of the night. Sigh. The only good thing to come of this would be if the MSM actually examines whether or not Wilson was telling the truth. Fat chance of that happening.

  28. I don’t know where it was in the speech that Wilson yelled “liar” but it could have been at soooo many places

It was a very partisan speech in which Obama offered no compromise or fig leaf. He continued to misrepresent his plan as before and attacked anyone who disagreed.

It was a campaign speech, full of red meat for the true-believers. But as you say it won’t bring over any Republicans, other than maybe the RINO’s like Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

    The battle lines are drawn.

  29. Great White Rat says:

Funny how the usual suspects are getting their panties in a bunch over Congressman Wilson’s comment, but they ignore the fact that less than one minute before that, Obama called Sarah Palin a liar in his reference to death panels.

I guess it’s not important whether you actually ARE lying or not. The important thing is who’s allowed to call someone else a liar.

  30. Severian says:

I watched a great movie on FX, the Pathfinder

Is that the one with the Vikings and the Indians, err, excuse me, the Native Americans and the Undocumented Norwegian Workers?

This is certainly an angry speech. If Obama were a Republican the media would be wondering aloud if he had lost his marbles and maybe the VP should step in to avoid a Constitutional crisis.

No kidding, he sounded deranged. So, instead of Lincoln, we have a toxic combination of the incompetence of Jimmy Carter and the personality aberrations and paranoia of Richard Nixon.

  31. Severian says:

He shouldn’t have apologized for that remark. He should have said “Well, I deeply regret if anyone took offense at my speaking Truth to Power, but when such blatant lies are being said it’s impossible for an honorable man to stay seated and quiet.” and then gone on to list more of Obama’s lies. In for a penny, in for a pound, they are going to demonize him regardless, make the most of it and don’t get timid.

  32. Tom TB says:

All but one of the 43 men who have taken the oath of the Presidency have inherited predecessors problems(Obama even got the number wrong in his inaugural address),so quit the complaining. The fact that other Presidents have tried and failed to nationalize health care may just mean that a majority of us don’t trust the government with that much power.

  33. Leslie says:

    ST,

I checked out the WAPO site this morning. Read Dana, Howie, and Baltz. I knew the focus would be on the semi-distinguished not much of a gentleman from South Carolina. Apparently, in one ill-timed remark (and I won’t get into whose a liar here–ain’t my concern), he did more for Obama than perhaps Obama did for himself the entire evening.

Speaking of lies and the lying liars who lie, I believe it was Thaddeus Stevens who, complaining about the corrupt Simon Cameron, Lincoln’s first Secretary of War, reportedly said, “well–he wouldn’t steal a hot stove.” When asked to apologize, Mr. Stevens did so this way: “Well, I might have been wrong about the hot stove.”

And the Yankees came back to win thanks to Jorge Posada’s HR, while ESPN gave more face time to the cute AMERICAN blonde who lost than to the cute DANISH blonde who won (well hah and hah–like all of ‘em she trains in the U.S. and speaks unaccented English), who politely hoped that more people would be cheering for her in the next round.

  34. Lorica says:

The Rep. Joe Wilson “liar” comment has become the story of the night. Sigh. The only good thing to come of this would be if the MSM actually examines whether or not Wilson was telling the truth. Fat chance of that happening.

It happened when Obama talked about no HC for illegals. Which only led me to believe that the next thing to happen is amnesty. I think the Rep Wilson, should press the issue. He should have the mark up bill in hand and start quoting directly from it. He should be talking to everyone and anyone who is rolling tape. It is time to gear up and reinforce our positions. – Lorica

  35. John says:

So nothing in the bill says anything about healthcare for illegals. It doesn’t say anything about healthcare for illegals now but they still attain and abuse the privledge of American provided healthcare. Illegals must be stopped from using healthcare in this country. period! This and tort reform alone could cut costs dramatically, and then insurance costs come down. How cool !!!!

  36. Brontefan says:

Am I the only one who noticed that this man has yet to give a speech that is truly PRESIDENTIAL? He can give “community organizer” speeches and plenty of campaign speeches with all the finger-pointing and false promises. . . . but where is the Presidential tone? He is the least experienced president ever elected to this office [and IMHO--pathetic]. He keeps forgetting that he is the PRESIDENT of all the American people—not just the special interest groups and unions who contributed to his election.

  37. Carlos says:

“He keeps forgetting that he is the PRESIDENT of all the American people—not just the special interest groups and unions who contributed to his election.”

Kinda just like the RINOs did after they had been in control of Congress 4 years.

I’ll give GW this: he told people how he would rule, and he did just as he said he would. The conservatives who were disappointed in him just refused to hear him.

Obama, OTOH, said he’d rule one way and hasn’t even come close after about 15% of his time in office. He was a sleazy Chicago thug before, he’s a sleazy Chicago thug now, and he’ll be a sleazy Chicago thug when he’s booted out of office in 3-1/2 more years.
