Did Vidal hear someone call his favorite rapist a "polaco" in Spanish, and assume the word was pejorative? It's not; like its Polish counterpart "Polak," it's just the word for Polish, which Polanski happens to be. Query how the Polish word for Polish ever managed to become an anti-Polish slur in English.
